Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellowship at the Rockefeller Institute of Government

The Rockefeller Institute of Government, the public policy think tank for the 64-campus State University of New York, is accepting applications for its fifth annual Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellowship Program. The fellowship seeks to connect cutting-edge policy expertise to public problems and the policy community that tries to address these problems. Fellows will work closely with the Rockefeller Institute of Government’s expert researchers on a variety of projects, including in the areas of healthcare, local government, fiscal policy, education, law, climate and environment, and social policy.

Appointments to the fellowship are for a period of one year, starting in September 2022. Fellows are expected to produce a portfolio that may include reports, blogs, or public forums, including the publication of reports and commentary pieces on the Institute’s website. Fellows will have access to the Rockefeller Institute’s facility, staff, and space for events. Full-time residence at the Institute’s headquarters in Albany, New York, is not required.

The Rockefeller Institute of Government invites applications from experts in the higher education community, researchers, practitioners, and retirees in a variety of fields who demonstrate a passion for working on pressing public policy issues of the day.

The Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellowships are unpaid, although a small amount of funding may be available for research-related travel or other items related to fellowship work for the Institute.

Required Elements of Application

Applications must include each of the following:

• A current resume or curriculum vitae of the candidate.
• A short description (up to 500 words) describing how the candidate plans to use the fellowship to do research or provide policy outreach in their field, and what products the candidate envisions producing for the Institute (reports; blogs; etc.). Candidates may be asked to submit additional detail about any specific project or project component.
• A description (up to 500 words) explaining the candidate’s current professional and topical interests and how the Rockefeller Institute’s Public Policy Fellowship could advance the candidate’s career and objectives in the areas in which the candidate is most passionate about.
• Contact information for at least two professional references. Candidates are encouraged to include a writing sample (previously written) that they feel demonstrates their ability to write in a policy-relevant style.
