Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellowship at the Rockefeller Institute of Government

The Rockefeller Institute of Government, the public policy think tank for the 64-campus State University of New York, is accepting applications for the second annual Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellowship Program. The fellowship seeks to connect cutting-edge policy expertise to public problems and the policy community that tries to address them. Fellows will work closely with the Rockefeller Institute of Government’s expert researchers on a variety of projects and policies in the areas of healthcare, fiscal policy, economics, education, law, and social policy.

Appointments to the fellowship are for a period of one year, starting in September 2019. Fellows will have access to the Rockefeller Institute’s facility, staff, and space for events, as well as the ability to publish reports and post commentary on the Institute’s website. In return, Fellows are expected to produce a portfolio that may include reports, blogs, or public forums. Full-time residence at the Institute in Albany is not required.

The Rockefeller Institute of Government invites applications from experts in the higher education community, practitioners, or retirees in a variety of fields who enjoy working on pressing public policy issues of the day.

The Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellowships are unpaid, but some funding may be available for travel or participation in events related to the Institute.

Created in 1981, the Rockefeller Institute of Government is a public policy think tank providing evidence-based policy analysis. Our mission is to improve the capacities of communities, state and local governments, and the federal system to work toward genuine solutions to the nation’s problems. Through rigorous, objective, and accessible analysis and outreach, the Institute gives citizens and governments facts and tools relevant to public decisions. We offer:

Required Elements of Application:

Only applications that include all of the following will be reviewed:

• a current resume or Curriculum Vitae of the candidate;
• a short description (no more than 500 words) describing how the candidate plans to use the fellowship to do research or provide policy outreach in their field;
• a description (up to 1,000 words) explaining the candidate’s current professional and topical interests as well as how the Rockefeller Institute’s Public Policy Fellowship could advance the candidate’s career and objectives (applicants are encouraged to include a discussion of the areas which the candidate is most passionate about and why);
• contact information from at least two professional references;
• candidates are encouraged — but not required — to include a writing sample (previously written) that they feel demonstrates their ability to write in a policy-relevant style.
