Nils Duquet is the director of the Flemish Peace Institute, an independent research institute—affiliated with the Flemish Parliament in Belgium—with a focus on peace and the prevention of violence. Nils is an international expert on illicit firearms trafficking, gun violence, domestic gun policies, and arms export controls. He has authored or edited more than 70 policy-oriented and academic publications. Recent publications include “Firearms, Conflict, and Terrorism – A Violent Nexus” (2025), “Firearms and Drugs: Partners in Transnational Crime” (2024), “The Nexus between Drug Markets and Gun Violence in the European Union” (2023), and “Pulling the Trigger: Gun Violence in Europe” (2022).
Nils has coordinated several large-scale European research projects on gun violence and arms trafficking in Europe (SAFTE, DIVERT, TARGET, INSIGHT) and is the chair of PEACE, a new European network of peace researchers. He is also the driving force behind the European Gun Violence Monitor (gunviolence.eu), an AI-powered tool to detect and analyze incidents involving firearms in all 27 EU member states.
