Monte-Angel Richardson’s research interests are firearm violence prevention within diverse and Latine(a/o/x) communities, countering violent extremism, trauma-informed practices, and transformative justice models. Combining social work and public health approaches at the local, state, national, and international levels, Monte-Angel focuses on the prevention of firearm violence and interruption of the processes that permeate trauma within marginalized populations and communities. At the University of Toronto, she is a member of the collaborative specialization in social work and public health policy and a research affiliate for the Centre for Research and Innovation for Black Survivors of Homicide (CRIB). Her dissertation research is a multi-methods study pertaining to the barriers and facilitators to involvement in firearm violence prevention practices among Latine(a/o/x) individuals residing in the South Valley community near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Monte-Angel is interested in innovative research methods that engage communities in the formulation of both the results and the problem, including participatory mapping, place-based research, and mixed methods study design. She is particularly motivated to investigate the ways that communities and individuals come together to resolve issues pertaining to violence through empirical examination of concepts such as collective efficacy, community organizing, and posttraumatic growth.
