Epidemiologist and Assistant Professor, Department of Population Health, New York University Grossman School of Medicine

Ellie Matthay is an epidemiologist and assistant professor in the Department of Population Health at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Her research focuses on understanding the social, economic, and physical characteristics of communities that shape violent injury and substance-use-related harms, and how public policies can shift these characteristics to reduce health inequities. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers on violence prevention, social policy, drug and alcohol policy, and epidemiologic and biostatistical methods. Her research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation. She is the recipient of the 2017 Society for Epidemiologic Research Tyroler Student Prize, the 2021 Society for Epidemiologic Research Lilienfeld Postdoctoral Prize, and a 2024 Equity & Justice Award from the Research Society for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms. Her current work focuses on the impacts of local-level alcohol control and economic support policies adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and their impacts on community firearm violence.
