Individual Mandate Penalties, 2014-16

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate — which imposed a fee for most individuals who did not have health insurance coverage — took effect January 1, 2014. The interactive map and charts below show how many people per state paid penalties from 2014 through 2016. The mandate was repealed by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which took effect January 1, 2019.
