Lars E. Almquist, PhD, serves as co-investigator on the HVIP Tactical Priorities Project at the University of Virginia. He recently earned his PhD in health services from the University of Washington School of Public Health, where his dissertation comprised three empirical studies examining the implementation, operation, and sustainment of hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) across the United States. Lars is one of a small number of researchers applying rigorous qualitative methods to HVIP practice—work that moves beyond program outcomes to examine how violence intervention actually happens: the tactics, judgment calls, and relational labor of the frontline professionals doing it. His current research agenda focuses on program sustainability and the practitioner expertise at the core of effective violence intervention.
