Highlights


• There were over 10.5 million motor vehicles registered in New York in 2005 with more than 83 percent of these passenger vehicles. Suffolk County had the highest number of registered motor vehicles at 808,985.
  
• There were 253,710 motor vehicle accidents in 2002, down 24 percent from the year before. Although the 1,509 fatalities in these accidents was 2.9 percent lower than 2001, it was still the second lowest number of deaths in over 20 years.
  
• Town roads accounted for more than one-half of the 113,343 miles of highways in New York in 2004.
  
• Of the 19,489 bridges in New York as of July 2006, 6,254 were either deficient or closed, down from 7,139 in the previous year.
  
• 147 million vehicles used the New York State Thruway in 2005, with over 9 percent of them entering at the Washington Avenue barrier (Exit 24) in Albany.
• More than 2.5 billion passengers traveled 677 million miles by public transit in 2005.
  
• There were nearly 39.2 million passenger enplanements in New York State in 2004, more than three-quarters of which were at J. F. K. and LaGuardia airports.
